Description
Written during my graduate work in composition, I did this at the request of fellow music graduate student, soprano Alanna Furst. She chose Poe’s The Haunted Palace as the text and allowed me to set the text as I saw fit. Given that the poem is an allegory with very strong imagery relating a king and his fortress being invaded to a human mind losing its sanity, I decided to try and paint the imagery with the music, setting a truly haunting mood. The use of a mixture of diatonic and chromatic harmonies and melodies, harsh and flowing rhythmic patterns, and motifs both rhythmic and melodic, all help to create a feeling of going back and forth between lucid thought and losing one’s mind. This work, though challenging, is a great feature for any soprano wanting to do something a little out of the ordinary.
