Description

The Sycamore Gap is dramatic dip in the Northern English landscape created by glacial meltwater next to Hadrian’s wall. Up until September 2023 stood an iconic solitary 150 year-old Sycamore tree which was one of the country’s most photographed trees-famously appearing in the 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” staring Kevin Costner- afterwards it gained the nickname the Robin Hood Tree.

It was also the scene of marriage proposals, sentimental moments, holiday photo’s/videos- even the scattering of ashes. Sadly, the Tree was felled as an act of vandalism in September 2023 and there was public outcry and sadness. Poems were penned about its untimely end and photographs from every angle, and every season, were shared.

However, since then, eight new shoots have emerged from the stump, raising hopes that the original tree will regrow. This piece is a reflection of the Sycamore Gap- the love and memories it has given and will continue to give to so many people.
