Description

Directors may print parts as needed for their ensemble only.

Originally composed for mixed choir by Russian composer Pavel Tschnesnokoff in 1913.  It is a sacred work performed a cappella.  The English translation is as follows: “Salvation is created, in midst of the earth, O God, O our God. Alleluia.” (source: CPDL.org)

While this work began for choir, an arrangement was written for concert band in 1957 by Bruce Houseknecht.  That version was my first exposure to the work.  I thought it would work well with the organic sound of a clarinet choir and set out to arrange it.  In this arrangement, I went back to the original choral work.  I kept the original time signature throughout most of the piece.  However, I did transpose the piece into a more clarinet-friendly key.

E-flat and contra players will notice their parts are very slim.  They are important, though, to the climax of the piece as they add color and depth.  The section from measures 59 to 76 should have a full, lush sound before returning to the quiet simplicity as found in the beginning of the piece.
