Description

This duet was written as my first experiment in bitonality. The title of the piece is simply an inversion of the word “ostinato.” The beginning ostinato in the cello is a rhythmic diminution of the famous Pachelbel Canon in D. To make it a little more distinct, it is also written in d natural minor. The contrasting melodic material is set in Bb major. I find that this triadic relationship makes for pleasing and interesting combinations of dissonances and consonances.
