Description
Jockey Polka for Brass Band:
Josef Strauss (20 August 1827 – 22 July 1870) was an Austrian composer. He was born in Mariahilf (now Vienna), the
son of Johann Strauss I and Maria Anna Streim, and brother of Johann Strauss II
and Eduard Strauss. His father wanted him to choose a career in the Austrian
Habsburg military. He studied music with Franz Dolleschal and learned to play
the violin with Franz Anton Ries.
Â
Even though Josef Strauss was a more serious
(even depressed) member of the famous Strauss family of musicians, quite
capable of writing music of darker character, he also had the talent to write
cheery fluff. This polka is just that, and while it may not conjure up images
of a jockey riding a horse, it will impart a playful sense of madcap hustle
with the bustle of its colorful notes. Lasting but a mere two minutes, this
delightful work will appeal to Strauss enthusiasts and lovers of light
classics.
