Description

This is a setting of a poem by Longfellow, expressing his sadness over
the loss of one of his wives. However, the poem’s sadness is tinged with
a child-like appreciation of the depths of winter, with the fascination
of snowflakes and the knowledge that life continues.

The piano part consists of musical snowflakes, each iteration different
from all the others in some aspect but looking the same from a distance.
The vocal line expresses continuity and the passage of time, while
acknowledging the grief of the poet.

A great piece for a recital or concert, it is available in a number of
transpositions to suit all voices.
