Description

Grainger found this tune in Miss H H Mason’s Collection of Country Songs – from Lancashire U.K.
It is a nonsense song in that additional verses, adding animals as the singer desires.
He freely adapted it for a 4 part women’s’ choir.
I have taken some liberties in my scoring for wind quintet, moving the melody around, and removing the longer quaver passage,

Note the peculiar spelling of Christmas as ….”Chrisimas”

It does have similarities with the Christmas Carol “I saw three ships come sailing by…..on Christmas Day in the morning”

My Grainger arrangements for various instrumental groups includes Shepherd’s Hey, Molly on the Shore, There was a pig went out to dig, Londonderry Air and Country Gardens.
