One of the most popular christmas song in Germany The song was first published in 1870 under the title Merry, merry Christmas in the collection Christmas Annual No. 2 of a New York publisher. The author of the text and music is named as Mrs. Thomas J. Cook, who worked as a teacher in the USA in the second half of the 19th century. The author also appears under the name Rebecca S. Cook; in some books both names are given as author details, but both forms of the name may refer to the same person. The song was reprinted in several Sunday school songbooks until 1896, and then again in 1923. The German text is occasionally attributed to August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben.
