The old eastern houses of Baghdad consist of a central courtyard surrounded by a group of rooms. It consists of two floors, a ground floor, and an upper floor, where each family from the poor class rents one of the rooms.
It happened that a young man called “Zakartia” used to live in one of these houses, and upon entering the house he noticed a beautiful face of a young woman on the top floor. He was dazzled by her beauty and felt a desire to speak to her, but traditions and customs at the time prevented him from that. Instead of speaking to her, he started singing for her this song.
